SRINAGAR: The government on Friday said that incidents of border shelling have increased in the last two years.
It said about 190 incidents took place in 2014 and 222 in 2015.
In response to question, the government said it has submitted a proposal to the government of India for construction of 20,125 community bunkers in the border villages in Jammu district.
The project would cost Rs 10.06 crore, it said.
The government said it had approved only 60 concrete bunkers at an overall investment of Rs 3 crore.
“All these bunkers are a part of the pilot project to understand the efficacies of these bunkers if and when the rival armies shell each-others’ positions,” it said.
The government, however, stated that it was never considering shifting of the border population. It said the populations shift to safer areas in the hinterland once the shelling takes place.
