Srinagar: Mirpur University of Science and Technology has conferred an honorary doctorate on Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani for “his uncompromising role and matchless contribution to the freedom struggle in Kashmir.”
The announcement about the doctorate to Geelani was made by president of ‘Azad’ Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Muhammad Yaqboob Khan at a two-day international seminar on Kashmir in Islamabad.
In a statement, Hurriyat (G) spokesman Ayaz Akbar said that a recorded video message of Geelani was played at the seminar organised by the varsity.

“While demanding a Scotland-type referendum in Jammu & Kashmir, Geelani sahab said that until the Kashmiri people are given a free and fair chance to decide their future, the Kashmir will remain a dispute and the political uncertainty and instability prevailing in the entire South Asian region will continue to haunt the peace efforts,” he added.
Geelani thanked the people, the government and the establishment of the Pakistan for supporting the Kashmir cause on all fronts, the spokesman said.
“He said Kashmir policy of Pakistan needs consistency so that the rigid and stubbornness of India will get exposed before the international community. Geelani sahab in his address appealed the world community to take serious notice of the war crimes and grave human rights violations committed by Indian forces and play their role in the peaceful and durable resolution of the Kashmir dispute in and accordance with wishes and aspirations of the Kashmiri people,” he added.
The spokesman thanked the varsity and said conferring the doctorate on Geelani has encouraged the Kashmiri nation by acknowledging the veteran resistance leader’s commitment to the cause.
