SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday justified exclusive bus service and other facilities for women saying that she has herself witnessed or gone through the torment while travelling in passenger buses.
“It is difficult for you to comprehend as to what happens with ladies travelling in passenger vehicles. You cannot understand it,” she told a male opposition legislator in the upper house who had criticized exclusive bus service for women.
“I have travelled in passenger vehicle. I know what happens in them,” she said. “I know what happens with our college-going daughters,” she said while recalling her days when she used to go to college and university.
“The women have big issues. You can’t understand them. How their modesty is outraged in passenger vehicles and how men try to touch them,” Mehbooba said.
She recalled as to how a Station House Officer in Khour repeatedly pared a woman who was in police custody.
She said that women were living under constant pressure and were afraid to raise voice against their tormentors. “I visited a hospital where female victims of self immolation were undergoing treatment. They were not ready to say anything against their tormentors. They were afraid of going back to their in-laws’ homes,” she said.
