Baramulla: Protestors blocked the Srinagar-Gulmarg road for hours on Monday in Druroo area of Tangmarg to demand release of local Hurriyat leader Bashir Ahmad Sheikh’s son, Sohail, whom the police took into custody three days ago for inciting violence and stone-pelting after police killed two alleged militants in the area.
Sohail Ahmad Sheikh’s detention became the rallying point for people to come out on the streets in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district and block the busy Srinagar-Gulmarg road for hours. A shutdown was also observed of shops and business establishments in Tangmarg area.
The father of Sohail, Bashir Ahmad Sheikh, has been associated with the Hurriyat Conference since a long time. Talking to reporters he said that his son was at home when protests broke out over the killing of the two alleged militants. He said that police barged into his house and beat his wife, his daughter, and other family members. He said the police arrested his son and though the officer assured that Sohail would be released after some questioning, he is yet to return home.
A senior police officer at Tangmarg said that Sohail has been involved in many anti-social activities and several cases are registered against him. He said that Sohail’s family members protested on Monday and tried to block the road but the police cleared them off the road. He said that a case had been registered against Sohail and further investigation will be done.
