Srinagar: Employees of various government departments who do not have a regular job held a demonstration at the press enclave here on Monday to demand a policy for regularising the 62,000 casual labourers of various departments engaged after 1994 as well as the immediate release of their pending wages.
The protesters carried banners and shouted slogans against the government. They assembled at the press enclave under the banner of J&K National Trade Union Front.
“The previous as well as present government principally agreed to frame a regularisation policy and promised to announce a committee that would frame the policy. But despite announcements, the government has failed to fulfill this promise till now,” a statement issued by them said.
President of the union, Mohammad Gafoor Dar, warned against “testing the patience” of labourers. He said it was very unfortunate that due wages have not been released since years. Sixty thousand labourers have been forced to agitate on the streets for their rights, he said.
