Murtaza Warriors win inaugural match
Handwara: A cricket tournament “Shaheed Nayeem Memorial Gold Cup cricket Championship 2016”organized in memory of Nayeem Qadir Bhat who was killed by government forces on April 9 this year started on here on Sunday.
He was killed when the valley was protesting against the alleged molestation of a girl by government forces.
The tournament is organized by the teammates of Nayeem Qadir Bhat of Handwara’s Star XI Cricket Club for which Nayeem used to play.
The tournament was inaugurated by Gulam Qadir Bhat father of Nayeem Qadir.
The inaugural match of the tournament was played between Murtaza Warriors Srinagar and Kashmir Gymkhana in which former beat latter by a margin of 10 runs.
Batting first Murtaza Warriors put a formidable total of 190 on the board in their allotted 20 overs. For Muruza Warriors Mohsin Ahmad was the main contributor with the willow scoring a quick fire 75 runs. In his 35 ball knock he hit half a dozen boundries and couple of lusty hits for maximum and provided much needed impetus to the run rate.
In reply Kashmir Gymkhana felt short by 10 runs from the set target of 190.Opener Adil Rashid played a valiant knock of 65 runs but couldn’t save his side from inevitable as Gymkhana was bundled out for 180.
They even failed to play their full quota of 20 overs. Apart from Reshi none of their batsmen produced a decent show with willow.
