Controversial shelter under construction in Kupwara

Srinagar: The government told the House that the urban development department has started construction of a shelter for the ‘urban houseless’ at Kupwara and Jammu and more such shelters will be constructed in Kathua, Anantnag and Reasi.
The government said these shelters will be “used as night shelters by the houseless, widows, destitute, attendants of patients and working women”. Land is being identified for shelters in other urban areas.
Since non-state subjects will also be housed in these shelters—the government didn’t say this in the House—resistance and civil society groups have said they would oppose these shelters as “they are aimed at settling non-state subjects in J&K”.
