SRINAGAR: Mobile subscribers of telecom giant Reliance Communications are outraged at receiving lewd messages from the service provider on a daily basis.
“Every day I receive messages from Reliance that have vulgar content. Yesterday I received a message where a girl was complaining about not having a boyfriend, and that she was interested in me,” complained 55-year-old Ghulam Hassan.
“I am an old man and have grandchildren. I am embarrassed to read such messages. I do not know why they send such messages to me,” Hassan said. He said he had repeatedly complained to the customer care but the messages keep coming.
Another subscriber complained that he receives such messages for no fault of his. “I have never subscribed to any value-added service, yet they send me these immoral messages. The concerned authority should look into the matter and direct the service provider to stop sending such messages.”
One of the messages that subscribers receive regularly reads: “Hi, I don’t have any boyfriend and feeling very much alone. For doing romantic talk call me at XXXXXX. I am waiting.” Another such message reads : “It’s been so long we have not talked to each other. I missed you a lot, now I’m back and want to talk to you call me at XXXXX.”
An executive working with Reliance telecommunications requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media. He said that it was not in his capacity to stop such messages and advised subscribers to file a complaint at the company’s website.
A similar issue had surfaced last year that prompted the Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani to call for a boycott of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). Geelani had termed such lewd messages as a state conspiracy to destroy the character of the youth in the valley.
