SRINAGAR: The government on Friday told the House that it was not shifting the CRPF camp located in the HMT factory in Zainakote area on the outskirts of Srinagar.
The government’s written reply to PDP legislator Noor Mohammad Sheikh betrays the assurance to move the CRPF camp out of Zainakote after a young man Gowhar Nazir was killed by the CRPF in Zainakote last year.
In its written reply the government said, “In the event of shifting of this Battalion Headquarters, sufficient manpower would be required for the protection of the unit, for which accommodation at Zainakote would be required. In view of these difficulties, as of now, there is no proposal under consideration for shifting of CRPF camp from Zainakote HMT (industrial area).”
The government cited security issues as one of the reasons for not shifting the camp.
“44th Bn. Headquarters of CRPF is housed in Zainakot HMT (Industrial area), Srinagar, for protection of this vital installation, besides performing ROP/other day to day law and order duties,” the government informed the House. “There is no private/government land or sufficient accommodation available in the vicinity for shifting CRPF Bn. from HMT,” the reply said.
