Govt has no info about Asia’s largest horticulture centre in Valley

2,35,002 fruit plants of various kinds produced at ACHD Zainapora

Srinagar: The Government Friday said that the Advanced Center for Horticulture Development (ACHD) at Zainapora in Shopian district will be a major center for propagation and distribution of High Density Planting and Root Stock material.
Minister for Horticulture, Ghulam Nabi Hanjoora, in reply to PDP MLA from Wachi, Aijaz Ahmad Mir, said that the center will also cater to quarantine requirements of future imported root stock/ plants besides part of it shall be used for demonstration of high density plantation.
However, the government did not reply as to whether the center is the Asia’s largest horticulture center.
The minister said that ACHD is spread over an area of 130 hectares (2600 kanals), adding that the plant material and root stocks are imported from the countries, including Bulgaria, USA, Armenia and CITH and then planted in the station .
“During last two years 2,35,002 fruit plants of various kinds have been produced from this farm and distributed among farmers,” the minister replied.
The minister said that during 2015-16 imported root stock (1.62) has been planted and kept under quarantine conditions at this farm for propagation and multiplication.
The minister, in reply to a supplementary question by the legislator, said that the juice factory which is defunct will be , possibly, made functional soon.
