Choppers, commandos pressed into service as 3 to 4 more militants suspected to be present in area
Kupwara: The army on Thursday claimed that they killed two militants here in Nowgam area of Handwara in Kupwara district.
An army official said that soldiers guarding a post along the Line of Control near Tootmar Gali noticed suspicious movement of some persons on Wednesday night and launched a search operation in the morning.
The militants, he said, escaped towards the Bungus Valley where they were surrounded by soldiers from 35 RR battalion and 16 Jat and Ist Naga regiments. Two of the five to six militants were killed in the exchange of fire so far in the operation that still continues.
Army is learnt to have pressed helicopter gunships into service and dropped para commandos in the area.
Kashmir Reader could not independently verify as to what exactly happened because the area is out of bounds for civilians and no civilian is allowed access to such areas during gunfights. Hence police and army are the only sources of information on such incidents.
