Srinagar: A 10-day workshop on econometrics began at the University of Kashmir here on Wednesday.
The workshop titled ‘Basic and Applied Econometrics’ is organized by the varsity’s economics department in collaboration with the Indian Econometric Society (IES).
Noted economist and former professor of KU’s economics department, Prof Nisar Ali, chaired the inaugural session, and emphasized on importance of econometrics for policy planning and governance systems. He said scholars and researchers are in a better position to make use of econometrics which would ultimately lead to better policy planning.
Controller of Examinations and professor of economics, Prof AS Bhat, talked about emergence of econometrics and its usage for economists.
Dr K Shanmughan from IES said the society aims to go down to grassroots — with the help of students and scholars — to train people in econometrics. He assured the society’s full support to the Department of Economics in educating its students and scholars about the basics and applications of econometrics.
In her welcome address, head of economics department, Prof Iffat Yasim, said the 10-day workshop is part of the department’s golden jubilee celebrations, and aims to develop skills and capacities of budding economics scholars in basics of econometrics.
