SRINAGAR: NC MLC Qaiser Jamsheed Lone and MLA Langate and Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) chief Engineer Rasheed staged a walkout from Tuesday’s Kupwara District Development Board meeting in protest against Handwara Killings.
In statement issued this evening, Awami Ittihaad Party (AIP) said that its chief walked out of DDB Meeting when government “failed” to clear its stand over certain sensitive issues.
“During his speech Er Rasheed asked government to explain what went to its promise of completing enquiry within one month in Handwara and Kupwara killings and to come out with the facts that who opened fire on unarmed civilians resulting in five deaths in the district?” the statement quoted speech of Rasheed.
Five civilians were killed in firing by forces after people erupted in protests against an alleged molestation by an army man in main Handwara Chowk last month.
He accused government of “subjecting” government employees to mental torture and harassment. “If DC has been directed to prepare list of stone pelters and government employees involved in so-called anti-national activities why doesn’t it even identify the killers in uniform despite announcements made by the CM,” he asked.
“If government has not been able to complete the magisterial probe within promised stipulated time period of one month, what moral authority it had to suspend near a dozen government employees by levelling false charges against them,” he said demanding if Kashmiri Pandit migrants are being talked out every minute and treated as a “privileged” class, “why doesn’t government care about the suffering of people of Keran, Karnah and other areas”.
“After getting no clear cut answers,” the statement said, “Er Rasheed had a heated argument with the ministers and walked out of the meeting as a mark of protest.”
Rasheed today also visited Hatmulla Kupwara where forces claimed to have killed five militants in an “encounter”.
“Locals told him that the circumstances raise many doubts about the incident and cited many reasons to conclude that the authenticity of said encounter needs to be verified,” the statement added.
National Conference District President Kupwara, MLC Qaiser Jamsheed Lone, also boycotted the District Development Board Meeting for Kupwara District to protest against the PDP-BJP “Government’s failure” in delivering justice to the families of the slain civilians in Handwara and Kupwara.
“I boycotted the DDB Meeting to register my protest against the mishandling of the sensitive situation in Handwara and Kupwara and the subsequent failure of the State Government to deliver justice to the victims and their families. The State Government should realize that its refusal to acknowledge its mistakes and wrongdoings cannot be tolerated and they cannot deny justice to the families of the victims,” Qaiser Lone said in a party statement this afternoon.
The NC Legislator said he would raise the issue of the Government’s failure to deliver time-bound justice to the families of the victims in the Legislative Council and seeks concrete answers from the Chief Minister.
