SRINAGAR: Jammu University Vice Chancellor has refused to be cowed down by the pressure tactics of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and its student wing Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), saying he will not allow the campus to be used for their political activities.
Jammu University VC Professor Ramjee Dass Sharma said on Tuesday that the campus was not `Ram Leela Maidan’ that could be used by political parties for their activities. Ramjee’s comments came after the BJP general secretary Ram Madhav slammed what he called the “obstinate behavior” of the VC to ban the party’s youth wing ABVP in all educational institutions in the region and said action would be taken accordingly.
“BJP ministers take up Jammu Univ VC obstinate behavior against ABVP. Action wl b taken (sic),” Madhav tweeted.
Ramjee said there was no ban on ABVP or any other student wing of political parties but they were operating illegally in the varsity. Coomenting on Ram Madhav’s tweet, Ramjee said, “He (Madhav) might have been informed by state BJP leaders,” he said. VC said that the ABVP wanted to hold a conference and invite their leaders for the event, but the varsity did not allow it. “It prompted them to gherao my office and break the locks of the university. They threatened me with my ouster,” he told Kashmir Reader.
“I informed Governor and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who assured me that such things won’t be repeated. But few months ago, they wanted to hold a blood donation camp in the name of ABVP on Shaheedi Divas,” he added.
According to Ramjee, he wanted the students’ wing of the saffron party to hold the blood donation camp under the supervision of Students Welfare Department or their respective departments but they resented it.
“Do you know who these students are? They don’t attend classes regularly and are protesting against examination, or whenever papers are tough,” he said.
