First popularised by Hollywood films, the interrogatory technique of one policeman playing the sympathetic role towards the interrogated person, and another the threatening violence one, but both working in tandem to break down the interrogated, is a real one. As most contemporary manuals of torture go, this was also invented by the Americans, and later picked up by Bollywood, in a fictional imitation of what was actually taking place in torture centres across the world, and in India, and then in Kashmir. Briefly, this consists of one of the two interrogators playing the role of the empathetic person, speaking to the interrogated of concerns of family, children, the future, the career, and the other one playing hardball, threatening extermination, muttering about ‘other ways of making you talk’, etc. The BJP and PDP are, roughly, playing the same role with Kashmiris.
Let us assume, for a moment, that all the hullabaloo about Mehbooba Mufti playing the spoilt child not given her favourite toy, and not immediately taking up her feudal role, after the death of her father, was real. One of the things mentioned in the weeks of the so-called ‘parleys’ interregnum, was the fact that the BJP, the alliance partner, had been contradicting statements meant for Valley consumption, and even raised issues, on its own, which were detrimental to that consumption. What has changed now? Recently, we have had issues of Sainik colonies and settlements for Kashmiri Brahmins as news issues. Isn’t it again that members of the PDP and BJP, just like the earlier so-called instances of objections raised by Mufti’s daughter for not agreeing to hastily take up her currently-hereditary throne, are again speaking at apparent cross-purposes? Isn’t it exactly the same situation, as when Mufti senior was alive, and statements on ‘contentious’ issues were labelled by each camp as being ‘personal opinions’ even as work, continuing apace exactly as the larger collective will of the ruling class wanted, as of the good/bad cops, was being implemented?
As a common Kashmiri, examine the situation: are Sainik colonies really being built? Are settlements for Brahmins and Dogras really being built? Do you know a clear answer, sans any ambiguity at all? Because, if you follow the news, which in our land happens to be in the form of statements by the ‘haakim e aalas’, you would be confused. Both the PDP and BJP are claiming different things. Who is being fooled here? And why don’t you, simply, know for sure?
