SRINAGAR: Atleast 1100 kgs of mangoes found to be treated with a harmful chemical Calcium Carbide for quick ripening were destroyed by a team of food safety officers here on Thursday.
Headed by assistant commissioner food safety district Srinagar, the team raided Parimpora Mandi and inspected stock of various wholesale fruit dealers. During inspection, they found pouches of Calcium Carbide were used as ripener in some mango boxes. The chemical releases acetylene gas which quickens ripening of mangoes. It is prohibited under food Safety & Standards Act. Officers warned dealers to desist from such unethical trade practice or face stern action under FSS Act that also includes closure of their business units.
