CUK’s Law deptt holds Eco walk

Ganderbal: As a part of its dissemination programmes on issues of socio-legal importance, the Department of Law, Central University of Kashmir (CUK) today organised an eco-walk from Wangath to Naranag. As many as 250 members of the department including faculty, students and administrative staff participated in this programme. The walk started from Government Higher Secondary Wangath and culminated at Naranag.
The students displayed placards, banners during the walk and played skits to sensitize the local population about preservation of forests, wildlife and water bodies. The local population was also familiarised with their obligations towards their surroundings in light of Forest Act, Wildlife Protection Act and Environment Protection Act.
The locals appreciated this move of the department and welcomed the participants. “This is not the first programme of the department. It has been a practice for past several years. The students of local higher secondary school who were impressed by the enthusiasm of the participants also joined this campaign for a while,” said head department of Law, Prof. Sheikh Showkat, adding that the students assured that they will ensure preservation and protection of eco-system of Wangath valley.
The participants delivered lectures in the corner meetings about the dangers which the environment of western Himalayas is experiencing as a result of deforestation.  As a part of the programme the participants impressed upon the locals not to resort to cutting of trees and dumping of hazardous wastes into the fragile valley.
In their presentations, the students highlighted the negative consequences of excessive human intervention in the eco-system in the form of flash floods, untimely rains and landslides. The locals were administered with oath of treating their surroundings as a sacred trust and maintaining their pristine beauty. MLA Sopore held meeting with local administration officials
