Doctor thrashed at Handwara after infant’s death

Baramulla: A medico at District Hospital Handwara was beaten up on Thursday following death of an infant.
The incident took place when 3-month-old Mimza, daughter of Mushtaq Ahmad Mir of Turkepora Handwara, died after a doctor at the hospital allegedly refused to see her.
“She had fallen ill at home. When she was rushed to the hospital, the doctor refused to see her for a long time. She died in her mother’s arms,” witnesses to the incident said.
Her death sparked a protest from the people, who also thrashed the doctor. He received injuries in his head, while the people also locked his private clinic.
The medical superintendent concerned, Dr Abdul Rouf, confirmed that the doctor, identified as Dr Firdous Ahmad, was beaten up and injured.
He, however, refuted that there was any negligence committed by the doctor.
“The doctor was attending patients in the OPD. When he reached the ailing infant, she was already dead,” he said.
Meanwhile, police has registered a case and started the investigations.
