Asks Naeem Akhtar to ‘formally join’ RSS
Srinagar: The Opposition National Conference (NC) has described the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the BJP’s Trojan Horse and its existence as a threat to Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. The party has also ‘advised’ education minister and government spokesman Naeem Akhtar to formally join the RSS.
Spokesman of the main opposition party Junaid Mattu, in a statement, said that the PDP’s contradictory statements and flip-flop on the Sainik Colony issue indicated ulterior motives that the party might have on a larger canvas with respect to the political rights and status of the State.
“PDP’s very existence is a threat to the State’s special status – as we have seen in the previous year and a half. PDP is nothing more than the BJP’s Trojan Horse put in place to weaken the State’s special constitutional status, and hence every such move that comes from them has the potential of being a ruse to harm Article 370,” Mattu said while asking the coalition to first decide as to whether the demand from state subject ex-servicemen for allotment of land in a ‘Sainik Colony’ is just and legitimate – as the party said earlier – or if this is a ‘controversial demand’ as stated by it now.
The NC spokesperson said it was a fact that the present PDP-BJP government was considering manipulating the ‘Sainik Colony’ allocation meant for state subjects to clandestinely extend a favour to its alliance partner to settle non-state subjects in the Valley. “BJP has gone on record to suggest that the proposed ‘Sainik Colony’ would be akin to ‘planting saffron in the Valley’. BJP MP Tarun Vijay while speaking to Economic Times has said he has full faith in Mehbooba Mufti, who he claims is a good friend and that he trusts her on the Sainik Colony plan. And that BJP believes Mehbooba Mufti ‘can do it and set up cities, not only colonies for Sainiks’. Tarun Vijay has also said that he and his party believe that Sainik Colonies will be like planting saffron and Tulips in a strife torn land where these colonies will bring ‘fragrance of Indianness’. This again exposes Mehbooba Mufti and the PDP”, Mattu added.
The NC spokesman claimed the previous NC-Congress government led by Omar Abdullah never allowed the State’s special status to be called into question.
In another statement, former chief minister Dr Farooq Abdullah said that the state government’s failure to stop the extension of NEET to J&K was an indication of PDP’s complete integration into the BJP.
Addressing party workers in Shopian, Abdullah said the NC was the lone party that could counter the nefarious designs and protect the State’s political rights and honour. “The state government had assured the students and the people of the state in general that it would ensure NEET isn’t extended to J&K and that the state’s special status is upheld. What happened to their appeal in the Supreme Court? They mounted a half-hearted effort and this was a pre-meditated arrangement with the BJP and the central government. Our students who have studied hard for a different curriculum are apprehensive about their future while the state government has no answers to offer. The PDP-BJP government should not hesitate to bring in an Act through the state legislature to protect the rights and future of our students if the need arises”, the NC President said.
Meanwhile, another senior NC leader, Aga Ruhullah, said that his party would continue to seek the revocation of AFSPA from the state. “Omar Abdullah led the efforts of the party to seek AFSPA’s revocation from the front, and he never hesitated to voice this demand even in the Legislative Assembly as the Chief Minister. He demonstrated the statesmanship and courage to raise this issue at the highest forums, even in the presence of visiting Prime Ministers. Sadly, Mehbooba Mufti has sold out to the BJP and their placards of ‘Revoke AFSPA’ have disappeared”, he said.
