SRINAGAR: Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G), Syed Ali Geelani, on Wednesday expressed shock and sorrow over the hanging of Ameer Jamaat-i-Islami Bangladesh Matti-ul-Rehman Nizami.
Geelani, in a statement issued here, appealed for organising special prayers and funeral prayers-in-absentia for him after the Friday congregational prayers.
He said Bangladesh has “practically become a province of India” and the Awami League president, Sheikh Haseena, on the behest of India has started a war against the Islamist people of the country.
“The leaders of Jamaat-i-Islami Bangladesh are being punished for their affection and love with Islam and Pakistan and it is moral responsibility of the government of Pakistan to raise their voice and concerns against this injustice in every possible ways and try to bring this serious issue into the notice of the organisation of Islamic countries (OIC),” he said.
Geelani paid tribute to Nizami, saying he was a “great Islamic scholar, an open-minded person, and a prominent intellectual who spent his entire life in the service of Islam”.
