Pregnant lady, newborn dies at Baramulla hospital; enquiry ordered

Baramulla: Protests erupted in Boniyar area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday evening after a pregnant woman and her baby died allegedly due to the negligence of doctors.
According to protesters, middle-aged Shameema, wife of Sajad Ahmad of Hillerperniyan village, was admitted to the District Hospital Baramulla on Monday after she had developed labour pain.
The hospital staff allowed her labour to continue for four days until the nurses had to facilitate her delivery in absence of the doctors on Thursday afternoon, they said.
Shameema, the protesters said, gave birth to a boy, but lost a lot of blood.
When the doctors arrived, they, seeing Shameema in a critical condition, referred her to Lal Ded Hospital, which is about 60 kilometres from Boniyar, they said.
“She breathed her last outside the Lal Ded Hospital,” Sajad Ahmad, her husband, said.
“It was a case of normal delivery, but it became complicated due to the unavailability of doctors,” he said.
“When we returned to the District Hospital with the dead body, the doctors abused us, saying, ‘we are not responsible. You should consult the doctors who treated her during the last nine months’. They asked us to go home with the body.”
The protesters marched to Baramulla police station where they submitted a written complaint against the hospital authorities.
On Friday, a team of doctors from the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) reached the District Hospital to enquire about the incident.
The team comprised deputy directors Dr Fayaz Ahmad and Dr Mehmooda Kar. They collected details about the incident and records of the deceased and also recorded statements of the doctors.
While talking to reporters, Dr Ahmad and Dr Kar, said they would investigate the matter and submit a report to the government.
The medical superintendent concerned, Dr Masood, said he has ordered an independent probe into the case.
He said Dr Abdul Qayoom, Dr Nisar Ahmad, Dr Abdul Ahad Wani, and Dr Rafia would carry out the investigation.
“We will punish all the people found guilty in the case,” he said.
Meanwhile, the insiders said a newborn also died at the hospital on Thursday due to unavailability of the doctors.
Dr Kar said they would also look into the allegations.
