GANDERBAL: Government is duty bound to provide safe drinking water to the people and eradicate water borne diseases in the State. This was stated by Minister of State for PHE and Irrigation & Flood Control Syed Farooq Ahmad Andrabi while inspecting functioning of Rangil Water Treatment Plant and Alastang Primary Sedimentation Tank there.
The Minister inspected Flash Mixer Cum Stilling Chamber, various water filtration units including Alum Tanks, Chlorination unit, and 20 million gallons per day (MGD) and 10 MGD water reservoirs besides water testing laboratories at Rangil.
Andrabi was accompanied by the Chief Engineer PHE G M Bhat, Chief Engineer Irrigation & Flood Control Javed Jafar, and other senior officers and engineers of the PHE department.
On the occasion, officials informed the Minister that the two water treatment plants at Rangil feed portable drinking water to more than seven lakh population of Srinagar City through its 51.63 km long pipeline.
The officials gave a detailed briefing to the Minister about the purification process and was told that the water in the treatment plants, which comes from Sind River, first undergoes screening and after that alum is added to aid sedimentation. The water then enters 10 filtration units from where it is transported for disinfection using chlorine in disinfection unit. Then water is stored in storage reservoirs for supply purposes.
During the inspection the Minister while going through Physico-Chemical Water Analysis report, stressed upon the Engineers to maintain quality and ensure safe drinking water is supplied to consumers.
He also held a review meeting with the senior officials of the PHE department and also had an interaction with the lower rung staff of the treatment plants. He stressed upon the officials to carry out regular inspection of water tanks and asked them to perform their duties with full dedication.
Later Andrabi visited Primary Sedimentation Tank (PST) in Alastang and also inspected under construction impounding reservoir there. He said there would be no compromise on the quality of work and assured full cooperation for the early completion of the reservoir.—Info dept.
