Arrest of youth sparks shutdown, protest at Kangan

Kangan: Arrest of a youth triggered a protest and a shutdown on Thursday in Kangan town of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
Police raided a salon here and arrested an undergraduate student Gowhar Rehman Rather (20). Police said he was involved in stone pelting during the protests held after the recent civilian killings in Handwara.
The arrest sparked a protest, with people taking to streets to demand release of the youth. The protesters were chanting pro-Islam and anti-police slogans. They also blocked the Srinagar-Leh highway.
The protesters refuted the police’s accusation that the youth was involved in stone pelting.
Following the arrest, all shops and business establishments in the town were closed to observed shutdown against the development.
The protests were going on when the last reports arrived here.
