SRINAGAR: Casual labourers staged a protest here on Monday to demand their unpaid wages and regularisation.
Under the banner of National Trade Union Front Jammu and Kashmir, the labourers gathered at the Press Enclave here and protested.
The protest was led by Mohammad Yousuf Wani, deputy president of the association.
“We condemn the delaying policies of the government regarding the settlement of casual labourers, need-based workers, and seasonal workers engaged after1994. We also oppose the delay in payment of wages to all the working-class labourers,” Wani said.
The protesters said that it was “very unfortunate” the government, despite written agreements, has failed to fulfill their demands. They said they were left with no choice but to protest.
They said almost 61,000 casual labourers and other such workers have already given “a sufficient time” to the government.
“We demand that our pending wages should be released and immediate steps should be taken to regularise us,” they said.
