May Day: NC pitches for societal change towards welfare of labour class

JAMMU: National Conference vice-president, Surjeet Singh Slathia on Sunday said the role of labour class in fighting exploitation “greatly helped in maintaining dignity of the work force”.
As per a statement issued here, Slathia while addressing an annual rally in Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan said the might of the work force cannot be undermined as they constitute major segment of our society. “Hence there is need for societal change towards the welfare of the labour class,” he said.
“Every day is a labour day but observing it on May 1 has a historical significance as hundreds of people sacrificed their lives during the Haymarket Massacre in Chicago nearly two centuries ago while struggling for their rights. Commemorating this day should not be a ritual but an occasion to pledge for well being of the labour class and strive for dignity and honour of the work force”, he said.
“Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah showed keen interest for the empowerment of labour force and this continues to be a guiding force for the party. As a result of progressive and revolutionary policies pursued over the years, the overall condition of work force has considerably improved. However, still more is required to be done in this regard”, he said.
A memorandum was also submitted on the occasion which the chairman SC/OBC Cell, Babu Rampaul, said will be taken up at appropriate forum. He urged the government to take immediate steps in mitigating the difficulties faced by working class. “The government and the society at large cannot abdicate their responsibilities towards their welfare and well being,” he said
