Wishes, aspirations of Kashmiri people more important
SRINAGAR: Hurriyat Conference (G) on Friday criticised the United Nations’ Kashmir statement, saying respecting wishes and aspirations of Kashmiri people is more important.
Chairman of the conglomerate, Syed Ali Geelani, and general secretary, Shabir Ahmad Shah, reacted to the statement mabe on Thursday by the UN Peace Building Commission chairman, Macharia Kamau.
Kamau had said that Kashmir issue “will be resolved in the context of the local domestic political environment between Pakistan and India”.
In a statement issued here, Geelani termed Kamau’s remarks as “ambiguous”, saying, “Respecting the wishes and sacrifices of Kashmiri people is more important than the political and local situations in the dialogue process of India and Pakistan. Ignoring the views of Kashmiris will be the murder of justice”.
He said instead of finding any solution in context of the local, domestic, and political environment between India and Pakistan, Kashmir issue should be resolved in its historical perspective and in context of its ground situation.
“Kamau’s statement reflects UN’s double standard and also negates the basic purpose and responsibilities of this world institution. Kashmir is the oldest-pending dispute in the UNO waiting resolution for the last seven decades. He should know that Kashmir issue is the biggest hurdle in establishing peace in the subcontinent and has caused huge loss of precious human lives in India and Pakistan due to the mutual wars fought by boht nations,” Geelani said.
Hurriyat (G) chairman said if UN fails in playing any significant role vis-à-vis Kashmir, “it will place a big question mark over the credibility and importance of this world body”.
Shah, who is also the chairman of Democratic Freedom Party (DFP), termed the statement of UN Peace Building Commission head as “unrealistic”.
In a statement issued here, Shah said Kashmir is not a bilateral or a border dispute between India and Pakistan but the issue concerning the right of more than 13 million people.
“If a local issue like South Sudan was resolved by UN and East Timur got divided with the interference of world powers, then how come India decide the future of 13 million people without taking them on board,” Shah said.
Shah said Jammu Kashmir “has its separate history and identity and was a free nation even when India and Pakistan were under British imperialist rule”. “The 18 resolutions pending in UN Security Council is a proof that Kashmir is neither an internal matter of any country nor a border dispute between India and Pakistan,” he said.
“Macharia Kamau must read the history of Jammu Kashmir and the resolutions that lie pending in the UNSC. He must initiate sincere efforts in finding solution to the issues concerning the freedom of subjugated nations,” he said.
Shah also hailed the statements of Pakistan PM’s advisor, Sartaj Aziz and Barjees Tahir in which they said that Kashmir issue will be resolved as per the wishes and aspirations of its people.
