Srinagar: A court in Kulgam on Wednesday convicted and sentenced 8 cops in connection with the killing of a National Conference member in south Kashmir district fifteen years ago. According to the prosecution, the NC member Mohammad Sikander was killed at Frisal in Kulgam in 2001.
“The prosecution is able to prove the Section 30 of the Police Act read with Section 3 of Police Enhancement of Penalties Ordinance 2005 without reasonable doubt, inspite of some minor discrepancies,” Chief Judicial Magistrate Kulgam said and convicted and sentenced 3 police constables, 4 SPOs and a PSO to five years of simple imprisonment.
“They are also sentenced a fine of Rs 5,000 each which shall be paid to the family of deceased if they deposit it, and in case of failure they shall undergo an imprisonment for a further two months,” the court added.
Those convicted are Nisar Ahmad Rather of Hazratbal Srinagar, Sheraz Ahmad Thokar of Hanjan Kulgam, Fayaz Ahmad Pala of Manigam, Aijaz Ahmad Thokar of Shoch, Sajad Ahmad Sofi of Hazratbal Srinagar, Bashir Ahmad Teli of Kangan, Reyaz Ahmad Najar of Kangan and Mohammad Arif Reshi of Chek.
