New Delhi: A spurt in infiltration across the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir has set alarm bells ringing in the Home Ministry of India, which has directed the government forces for effective vigil in border areas.
Official sources said only three militants could infiltrate through the LoC from across the border in the first two months of 2015. However, in January and February this year, at least 10 militants sneaked through the LoC to enter Jammu and Kashmir.
During winter, infiltration is always low. However, this year, the winter did not last long and militants are suspected to have taken advantage of the favourable weather, sources said.
There were 121 infiltration attempts along the border in Jammu and Kashmir in entire 2015 of which 33 were successful.
However, 46 militants were killed by the government forces.
In 2014, there were 222 infiltration attempts in the state of which 65 were successful. A total of 52 militants were killed by the government forces that year.
Altogether, 208 incidents took place in the Valley in 2015 in which 39 government forces personnel and 17 civilians were killed.
There were 222 incidents in J-K in 2014 in which 47 government forces personnel and 28 civilians were killed, he added. There were 253 instances of ceasefire violation along the IB in 2015, 430 in 2014 and 148 in 2013.
