Baramulla: A leopard attacked and killed a man in Zirhama area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district late on Saturday evening.
Abdul Rashid Badana, son of Shamas u Din Badana, was attacked by the leopard when he was walking home after praying in the nearby Mosque.
According to the locals, the beast dragged Rashid towards the forest, but the people managed to rescue him by chasing away the beast.
Badly-wounded Rashid was rushed to the nearest hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead, they said.
Soon after the incident, dozens of Zirhama residents took to the streets to protest the administration’s alleged inaction over the presence of “man-eater beast” in the area.
They said the leopard has been roaming the area for the past several weeks while the authorities, despite repeated pleas, did nothing to prevent attacks.
“The administration, particularly the wildlife officials, did not pay any attention to our problem. Today the beast killed the father of three kids,” they said.
Wildlife warden for north Kashmir, Mohammad Maqbool Baba, said a team of officials has been sent to the area or killing the beast.
