People take to streets against water shortage

Hajin: People took to streets in many villages of Bandipora district against drinking water shortage in the area.
Reports said that residents of Markundal and Baharabad areas of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district held a protest demonstration against the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department for failing to provide drinking water in these areas. The protesters, mostly women, blocked the Hajin-Srinagar road for many hours, which disrupted the vehicular movement in the area.
The protesters said they were not getting drinking water from past three days. They said that the failure of the PHE department forced them to take to the streets.
Talking to Kashmir Reader, the protestors said that though the matter was brought into the notice of officers of the department, but no action was taken. “We were told that some repair work is going on on some cracked pipes. But how long does it take?” they asked.
The protesters claimed that a number of pipelines have not been repaired despite the fact that bills worth lakhs have been drawn for the works.
Later a police party rushed to the spot and assured the protesters that their issue would be forwarded to the district administration.
Meanwhile residents of Hajin too complained about acute water shortage due to damaged pipes.
