Sopore: As the strike against central government’s proposal to levy 1 per cent excise duty on gold continues in entire valley, the jewelers of north Kashmir’s Sopre town on Friday staged a dharna in the main chowk of the town to register their protest.
Mohammad Afzal Lara, president of Sopore jewellers union, told Kashmir Reader that the government has to roll back the proposal of levying excise duty on gold. “We will protest till the proposal is not rolled back.”
He said the government’s attitude in dealing with the jewellers’ strike is responsible for jewelers going out of bounds for common people. The protestors chanted slogans seeking rollback of the tax that was proposed by the Union Finance Ministry in the Budget 2016-17.
