SRINAGAR: The Srinagar-Leh highway is likely to be thrown open for vehicular traffic in the second week of April. The snow clearance process is underway in the tough Zoji La pass area.
Chief Engineer Project Beacon Brigadier A K Das said that more than twenty active avalanche sites exist on the Baltal-Zoji La track where around 40 feet thick layer of snow had accumulated during the winter.
“These avalanche sites are giving a tough time to the jawans of Border Roads Organisation to clear the road. All safety measures are being taken by the jawans to deal with the situation keeping in view the rise in day temperature that enhances chances of avalanches,” Das said.
He said the BRO lost two personnel during the snow clearance process at Kupwara –Tangdhar road
The Chief Engineer said that snow clearance process started ahead of its schedule this year due to less snow accumulation till February.
However, the Zoji La stretch witnessed a moderate to heavy snowfall in the month of March forcing the BRO to activate men and machinery.
“We are ten kilometers behind the zero point. It will take us another three to four days to clear the stretch,” Das said.
Referring to re-opening of Razdhan Pass on Gurez-Bandipora highway, he said the connecting Gurez , Brig AK Das said that the road shall be opened by second week of April. He said around30 feet thick layer of snow had accumulated at Razdhan Pass that would require sufficient time for clearance.
