ANANTNAG: Authorities have asked the people of Bongam Qazigund in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district to refrain from using water from a local spring after the smell of kerosene started emanating from it on Thursday.
People of the village, falling in PHE division Qazigund, morning complained to the authorities that kerosene-like smell was emanating from the spring.
A team of officials was rushed to the spot, and it found the complaint to be true.
“I personally rushed to spot to check whether the complaints carried any weight. On smelling the water, I found their complaints were true. Some kerosene smell did emanate from the spring,” executive engineer, PHE division Qazigund, Rajinder Pandita, told Kashmir Reader.
He said that they instructed the villagers not to use the water till further directions.
“We have started supplying water to the village through tankers also,” the executive engineer said.
He said that they have also sent water samples for analysis to the central laboratory of the department in Srinagar.
“I have also taken up the issue with the district administration. Hopefully the health department will also collect water samples for analysis. But until and unless the reports of the analysis come we won’t allow the people to use the water,” Pandita said.
