SRINAGAR: Residents from Karnah area in frontier district of Kupwara on Tuesday held a protest at Press Colony here asking authorities and Border Roads Organisation to start work on a tunnel to ease connectivity of this area during winters.
They said the area remains disconnected for several months in winters, causing immense hardship to the people of the area.
“The road connecting the area with Kupwara town has to pass over the high Sadhana pass that remains under snow for long periods therefore a tunnel was proposed from Chowkibal to other side that would end this winter blockade of the area,” Fayaz Ahmad Karnaie, a resident of Karnah said.
He said the frequent blockade of the only road link with rest of the Kashmir during winter has immensely hit the economy as well as health care. “Recently a sick patient could not move to Srinagar for specialised treatment beuase of the road blockade,” he said.
The locals said that they had been promised construction of a vital tunnel many times but so far there has not been any work.
They also raised slogans against their local MLA for not fulfilling this demand.
The tunnel according to locals will benefit a vast population of Karnah including Gabra, Nachiyan, Triboni, Hajitra, Dhani Teetwal and many other far flung villages.
