CAIRO:Unidentified hijackers seized an Egyptian airliner on Tuesday and diverted it to Cyprus, where it landed at Larnaca airport on the south coast, Cypriot police said.
The hijackers contacted the control tower at 8.30am and the plane was given permission to land at 8.50am, the police said.
The hijackers made no immediate demands and a crisis team has been deployed to the airport. A bomb is suspected to be on board.
The plane is carrying 55 passengers and seven crew, according to an Egyptian airport official.
The pilot was threatened by a passenger with a suicide belt, the Civil Aviation Ministry said.
In a statement, the ministry said pilot Omar al-Gammal had informed authorities that he was threatened by a passenger who possessed a suicide belt and forced him to land in Larnaca. Agencies
