Ramban/Baramulla: Four persons were killed when a truck they were travelling in fell into a gorge in Ramban district, a police official said on Sunday.
He said the vehicle skidded off the road and fell into the 600-feet deep gorge in the Sumbar area of the district last evening.
All four deceased, Mushtaq Ahmad, Shabir Ahmad, Karnail Chand and Parvaiz Ahmad, were working with the Hindustan Construction Company, which is constructing a railway tunnel in Sumbar area, he said.
A case has been registered and investigation is on to ascertain the cause of the accident, the official said.
Ramban district development commissioner Bashir Ahmad Dar and Ramban SSP Randeep Kumar visited the bereaved families and expressed sympathies with them. Dar also visited the spot and directed the company authorities to ensure maintenance of roads to avoid such incidents in future.
In another tragic incident, two labourers were buried alive under an avalanche in Nechian village of Karnah tehsil in Kupwara district on Sunday morning.
The deceased, Rafiq Ahmad Chechi and Nazir Ahmad Chechi, were clearing a road off the debris when the avalanche struck them at Khooni-Nala.
Kupwara senior superintendent of police Ajaz Ahmad said that a police team retrieved the bodies from the debris. Both labourers were working with BEACON, which constructs roads in border areas.
The authorities had issued an avalanche warning in the upper reaches of north Kashmir and a few other areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
