BARAMULLA: Two civilians were killed on Sunday after being buried under an avalanche in Karnah tehsil of Kupwara district.
Reports said that two labours -Rafiq Ahmad Chachi and Nazir Ahmad Chachi – resident of Nechian village of tehsil Karnah of district Kupwara was working with department of BEACON buried alive, when an avalanche hit them in Khoni Nala in the area on Sunday morning, soon after the incident Kupwara police and locals rushed to the spot and recovered the both the dead bodies.
Senior superintendent of police Kupwara Ajaz Ahmad confirmed the accident and said that, soon after the incident a team of Kupwara police reached the spot and recovered both the labours dead from the avalanche and later handover to their families after legal formalities. The local people of the area said that duo were working as labours with BEACON department and they were clearing a local road when a heavy avalanche hit them.
The authorities were earlier issued an avalanche warning in the upper reaches of north Kashmir and other few areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
Meanwhile, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) too expressed grief over the loss of human lives in a tragic incident.
In a statement issued here, PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti expressed sympathies with the bereaved families and prayed for eternal peace to the departed. She also urged the government to speed up the rescue measures for retrieval of their bodies and provide ex-gratia relief to the families of the deceased.
MLA Karnah Raja Manzoor and MLC Javaid Mirchal, also expressed grief the tragic incident and conveyed sympathies with the bereaved families.
