Freedom Party protests chairman Shah’s detention

SRINAGAR: Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) activists from Budgam district held a protest here on Friday against the continuous detention of the party’s chairman, Shabir Ahmad Shah.
A DFP spokesperson, in a statement issued here, said the protests were led by party’s district president, Abdul Gani.
Gani, he said, also addressed the protesters and termed Shah’s detention as “based on political vengeance”.
“Government has no justification to keep Shah under detention. By banning the political activities of pro-freedom leaders, the administration only complicates the already-tense situation in the Valley,” he said.
The spokesperson said Shah has been under continuous detention for the last 30 months.
“He is either under house arrest or in police detention and authorities don’t provide any legal justification for such unconstitutional detentions,” he said.
Meanwhile, a DFP delegation visited the Brari Angan martyrs’ graveyard to pay homage to the victims of Pathribal and Barakpora killings.
“The delegation paid tributes to the martyrs and demanded punishment to the culprits,” the spokesperson said.
