Prisoners not produced in court for trial, says Bar Association

SRINAGAR: J&K High Court Bar Association, Kashmir, on Tuesday said the prisoners lodged in Baramulla District Jail were not being produced before the court for trial.
In a statement issued here, the lawyers’ body said its members visited the jail and interacted with various prisoners.
“After interacting with the detenues and undertrial prisoners, it was found by the team members that the undertrial prisoners of District jail Baramulla whose cases are pending in the Court of Additional Sessions Judge Sopore are not being produced before the said court, regularly,” the body said.
“Off and on, it is stated by the jail authorities that the SSP Baramulla has not provided escort for taking them to the court, as a result of which their cases are making no progress,” it said.
Bar said the detainees also stated that there was no doctor available in the jail for them.
“They said that even a Medical Assistant or a nursing orderly is not being provided by the jail authorities.”
“They said that there are nine male and one female barracks, but in none of the barracks is there any TV or a Radio. They stated that bathroom and the kitchen in all the barracks are completely damaged, but no steps are being taken by the jail authorities to repair the bathrooms or the kitchens,” Bar said.
The lawyers/ body said the detainees were forced to take “impure, muddy and untreated” water coming from the river Jhelum.
“They stated that there is no provision for emergency escort of the prisoners to the hospital. They stated that even if a prisoner is required to be taken to the hospital, he is not shifted to the hospital by the jail authorities for want of escort. They stated that they don’t receive any magazine or a journal in the jail, while they are also not provided clothes,” Bar said.
