Srinagar: Langate MLA Engineer Rashid met Mehbooba Mufti at her Fairview residence and asked her to forge an alliance with her party’s arch rival, National Conference.
Rashid’s visit to Mehbooba comes a day after her return home, following BJP’s categorical refusal to accept any pre-condition for the government formation in the state.
Rashid had made this suggestion to the PDP at the time of government formation last year also.
Sources in PDP said Rashid’s visit will achieve nothing, as Mehbooba is yet to close the doors for BJP.
“Don’t read too much into it. She will not walk out of the alliance so easily because she knows the BJP will make a positive announcement on the Agenda for Alliance,” said a senior PDP leader.
Apart from return of two power projects, the PDP wants its former coalition partner loosening of purse strings for the financially-starved state.
Prime minister Narendra Modi, however, is averse to committing anything to Mehbooba until she takes over as the chief minister of the PDP-BJP coalition government.
He has reportedly said that any demand should come through a government instead of a political party.
Mehbooba and BJP chief Amit Shah had met in New Delhi last week but the meeting could not resolve the ongoing stalemate. BJP’s Kashmir minder Ram Madhav had announced the talks have failed and the new demands would not be accepted.
This prompted many to believe that PDP legislators have been scheming behind closed doors to pressurise Mehbooba to form the government. However, they have not conveyed it to her yet, the PDP leader said.
