SRINAGAR: Hurriyat Conference (G) on Friday said Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi’s speech at ‘World Sufi Forum’ is contrary to what he, and his party, stands for.
It also accused Modi-led government of using the word ‘Sufi Islam’ in a planned manner “to hide its crimes against the humanity”.
Modi had on Thursday praised Islam for its message of peace and harmony and described Sufism as one of its greatest contributions.
“Of the 99 names of Allah, none stands for force and violence and the first two names denote compassionate and merciful. Allah is Rahman and Raheem…Those who spread terror in the name of religion are anti-religious,” Modi had said.
In a statement issued here, Hurriyat (G) said the love, patience, and tolerance of which Modi spoke about “is eliminated at a very fast pace in India as this country has become a mark of violence and intolerance”.
“In this so-called secular country, a person can be brutally and mercilessly killed on suspicion of eating the cow meat, a historic place of worship for Muslims – Babri Masjid is demolished and replaced by a temple, and in the name of ‘Ghar Wapsi’ (homecoming), the poor and needy people from minority communities are forced to become Hindus,” the statement said.
The conglomerate said the Sufi personalities present in the conference “definitely can’t harm even an animal but by not speaking over the happenings in Gujarat, Muzaffarnagar, Assam, and Kashmir and maintaining silence over the brutal actions of RSS and Shiv Sena against minorities particularly Muslims, they have actually proven themselves as aliens. Such silence has created a question mark over the organising of the conference”.
Hurriyat (G) said at a time when BJP-led government in India is facing criticism around the world due to growing “intolerance”, the Sufi conference “could be an attempt of damage control”.
“Islam is a religion of nature and peace, love, patience, and tolerance are its basic teachings. However, as Islam prohibits atrocities and oppression on people, it also terms the acceptance and tolerance of oppression as unnatural and illogical. Violence and terrorism have no place in Islam but to counter the resistance movements which are active in Kashmir, Palestine, and other regions against the forced foreign occupations, the imperialistic powers are using the word ‘Sufi Islam’ in a planned manner. Now, India too has started to promote this system to hide its crimes against the humanity,” the statement said.
