JKLF leaders, activists take out rally; many detained

Srinagar: Police detained Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) activists during a protest rally — against the harassment of Kashmiri students and use of pellet guns — staged from Kokar Bazaar to Lal Chowk here on Friday.
Led by JKLF vice-chairman, Showkat Ahmad Bakhshi, the protesters marched from Hamzah Masjid, Kokar Bazar, towards Lal Chowk.
The police, however, intercepted the rally midway and used force to disperse the protesters, Bakhshi and many activists were detained and shifted to Kothi Bagh police station.
Talking to reporters prior to his detention, Bakhshi expressed concern over the use of pellet guns during protests in Kashmir.
“Due to the use of these lethal weapons, many young people have lost their eyesight. Pellet guns and pepper gas are tools of oppression.” Harassing innocent Kashmiri students studying in various Indian states “is part of a policy to frame the students in false cases,” he said.
He also condemned the detention of Professor SAR Geelani and demanded his immediate release.
