JAMMU: The Governor administration has issued instructions to the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to ensure adequate sanitation in Srinagar city and find an immediate solution to clearing garbage from the city interiors.
The instructions were issued after Governor NN Vohra asked Financial Commissioner Planning and Development Department, BB Vyas to urgently review all existing and arising problems relating to Solid Waste Management (SWM) in Srinagar City.
An official spokesman said that Vyas held a meeting with the relevant officers and agencies before reporting back to the Governor on measures initiated by the SMC. The measures include clearance of 1,350 MTs of garbage accumulated up to March 16 besides the clearance of the rest of the garbage by March18.
According to the instructions, the Commissioner SMC shall ensure covering heaps of 3,000 MTs spread over 150 kanals of land with plastic sheets to address the issue of foul smell. The officer shall take immediate action to ensure proper utilisation of the cycles (funded under ADB Project) for collection of garbage from within narrow streets. He shall also take immediate action to enlarge the pilot project undertaken by CHINTAN for the segregation of waste at source-points of collection from the existing 2 to 10 wards.
The DC Srinagar has also been instructed to remove all encroachments and illegal constructions which have come up around the Achan land-fill site while the ERA shall support the efforts for speeding up garbage dumping and leach-removal arrangements at Cell-II in Achan. To enable additional dumping of about 30,000 MTs, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir shall ensure availability to ERA of adequate quantity of earth from the nearest possible source(s).
