Kupwara: A shutdown was observed and special prayers held in Poshwari area of Kupwara in remembrance of seven civilians killed by government forces inside a mosque on March 15, 1991. The civilians were killed by personnel of the Border Security Force inside the mosque when they were offering morning prayers
Villagers assembled in different mosques of Poshwari in Trehgam area of Kupwara and marched to the local graveyard to offer special prayers. All the shops in the village remained shut while transport plied normally on the roads.
Recalling the incident, Gulam Ahmad of Poshwari said that that day, BSF troopers cordoned off the village and ordered villagers to assemble in a local school ground. He said that at least twenty people were offering morning prayers in Masjid Qasimi when the troops barged in. “They shot dead the Imam and dragged others outside the mosque. They shot dead six more people and many others received bullet injuries,” Ahmad recalled. He said that troops fled the village after the massacre.
“Though a case was registered against the BSF, but till date the victim’s families are waiting for justice,” he added.
