Rashid asks govt to address garbage problem in Srinagar

SRINAGAR: Awami Itihad Party (AIP) president and MLA Langate, Er Rashid on Saturday warned government of “dire consequences” if it fails to address the “grave” problem of garbage dumping at Achin, Eidgah in Srinagar.
He said the successive governments have played with the lives of people living in the vicinity of garbage dumping site.
As per a statement issued here, Rashid while addressing a gathering at Achin on Saturday said, “Government has breached the trust and agreements with the inhabitants of this area and is now using forces to curb the voice of victims. Even a layman can see how nuisance the situation is and how the foul smell and other waste material poses risk to people’s health.”
“Not only does the population of thousands suffer but the famous Anchar lake, prestigious SKIMS, and the valuable agriculture land also gets affected due to the problem. Successive governments have failed to address the very humanitarian problem and the move of dumping millions of tons of garbage at Achin is one among the notorious plans to ruin historical Shehr-e-Khaas”.
He also condemned “use of police force” on the inhabitants who have been rightly stopping Srinagar municipality officials from dumping the garbage at the site.
“People are justified to use all available options to get rid of the problem and if government fails to take time-bound appropriate measures,” he said.
