Three missing Kupwara men still untraced

Kupwara: Three Kupwara men who were allegedly abducted by an army soldier from their village in Kupwara in November last year are still untraced. The accused soldier has been bailed out by the court and has rejoined his duties.
The trio: Ali Mohammad Sheikh of Trehgam, Ghulam Jeelani Khatana and Mir Hussain Khatana of Dardpora village of Kupwara- were abducted by an army soldier Manzoor Ahmad Khawaja posted with the Territorial Army, Trehgam camp, on November 17 last year. They were never seen after that and are still untraced. Police arrested the accused army man after the families of the missing persons approached the court seeking an investigation. But later, the accused was bailed out and he has rejoined his duty.
Haseena Bano wife of Ali Mohammad Sheikh, Saleema Begum wife of Mir Hussain and Mamdin Khatana, a close relative of Gulam Jeelani Khatana while talking to Kashmir Reader on Wednesday said that their kin are still missing and police had failed to trace them. “We have no option but to wait,” they said.
Although Manzoor had conceded before the police that he was in touch with the trio before they vanished, he stopped short of revealing what happened to them later. He has been pleading not-guilty but the families of the disappeared have contested both the police version and Manzoor’s denial.
