Hizb militant laid to rest amid Azadi slogans, shutdown in Kulgam

Anantnag : A complete shutdown is being observed in Kulgam district over the killing of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant, Dawood Ahmad Shiekh, in an encounter with government forces on Sunday evening.

All the shops and other business establishments are closed in main town Kulgam, Quimoo ,Khudwani , Yaripora, Bogam and other adjoining areas of the district. Traffic is also off the roads across the southern Kashmir district.

Meanwhile, thousands of people participated in the funeral prayers of Dawood at his native village Quimoo. Despite the imposition of section 144 by the authorities, witnesses said, hundreds of people from different areas of the district rushed towards Dawood’s native village to participate in his Nimaz Jinaza (funeral prayers). His body was carried to the graveyard in a huge procession amid pro-freedom and anti-India slogans, witnesses said.

Due to huge number of people, funeral prayers were offered at least three times.

The encounter at Buchoora village ensued last evening after militants in an attempt to break through the cordon came out of the house, in which they were hiding, and fired at the government forces. The fire was retaliated by the government forces, resulting into the killing Dawood while his associate managed to escape. Local youth, soon after hearing the gunshots, had assembled near the encounter site and engaged the government forces in clashes. Dawood, according to police, was active from last three years and was among wanted cadres of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen.
