Srinagar: Hizbul Mujahideen militant Dawood Ahmad Sheikh alias Chhotu son of late Gul Mohammad Sheikh of Reshipora, Qaimoh, Kulgam, was killed by government forces on Sunday night.
A soldier was injured during the operation while another militant is believed to have escaped.
Local residents told Kashmir Reader that shortly after the police and army surrounded Buchroo village of Kulgam district on late Sunday evening, they heard a few gunshots. The guns then went silent.
However, the sound of gunfire prompted a few dozen youths to come onto the roads and throw stones at the government forces besides shouting pro-freedoms slogans to help the militants escape. However, the forces did not retaliate with teargas or empty rounds as they usually do.
It was learnt that the forces recovered Dawood’s body and widened the area of the operation to surrounding village like Bugam, as they had inputs about the presence of another militant. Dawood had joined the outfit in 2014, sources said.
However, the operation was called off later after it transpired that the second militant had escaped.
After the killing of two civilians in army firing in Lelhar Pulwama during an encounter, police had issued an advisory asking the people to stay away from the encounter sites.
The advisory had even asked the people to not even peep through the windows when the gunfights are on.
However, youths continue to ignore the advisory and risk their lives for militants. A few days ago, people in Tral, where three militants were killed during a nightlong encounter, had thrown stones at the government forces and attempted to march towards the encounter site. Their forces, however, stopped people using teargas canisters.
