Sopore: A group of shopkeepers on Friday staged a protest demonstration against the shifting of Assistant Regional Transport Officer’s (ARTO) office from Chanakhan locality to Amargarh in north Kashmir’s Sopore town. The shopkeepers shouted slogans against the ARTO and observed that the avoidable shifting would impact their livelihood.
The ARTO attracts a flurry of people seeking registration of vehicles, registration and renewal of driving licences and vehicle permits.
The protestors alleged that ARTO Sopore Abdul Ahad Yatoo was instrumental in shifting the ARTO building.
Meanwhile, Traders Federation, a representative body of Sopore traders also supported the protest and expressed anguish over the unilateral decision of the ARTO.
“I am earning my livelihood here since 1992 because of the business generated by the ARTO. The shifting of office will impact my employment and result into the suffering of my family”, said a local shopkeeper.
Yatoo refused to comment on the development saying he was busy in a meeting.
