Freedom Party condemns Shah’s continuous detention

SRINAGAR: Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) on Friday condemned the continuous detention of its Chairman Shabir Ahmad Shah and the arrest spree of youths across valley.
Shah was arrested on February 28 during a night raid and is lodged in police station Rajbagh, Srinagar.
In a statement issued here, a DFP spokesperson said authorities have no justification in keeping the pro-freedom leadership under detention. “Youths are, under a well planned strategy, pushed to the wall and the whole state has been converted into a virtual jail.”
Giving details of Shah’s detention, the spokesperson said, “This year, Shah Sahib has been kept under imprisonment for 56 days and barred from offering 10 Friday prayers. The motive behind keeping the pro-freedom leaders under imprisonment is to keep them away from the people. As such, the government’s pro-democracy slogans are proving hollow and it must realise that we won’t deter from pursuing our mission.”
“Police is threatening DFP workers and has started crackdown on them. Party’s Abdul Waheed (Langate) has been shifted to Kot Bhalwal jail and several others are arrested and lodged in police stations. Keeping National Front chairman Nayeem Ahmad Khan under continuous house detention and arrest the ailing Tehreek-e-Hurriyat leader Raja Mehrajuddin is nothing but a political vengeance by the so-called government,” the spokesperson added.
